New Mareeba Boxing and Judo Hall

June 29, 2017

Mareeba has a new Boxing and Judo Hall, thanks to the Community Development Programme and our RISE job seekers.

Our job seekers have developed skills in carpentry; paving; painting; welding; landscaping; concreting and other facets of the general construction and labouring industry.

Mareeba Shire Council, Mayor Tom Gilmore, said, ”What a fantastic project this has been for the people of Mareeba.”

The refurbishment of the hall has ensured that this infrastructure is now a community benefit, with the primary use of the property being for the Mareeba Boxing Association. Since the refurbishment of the hall, the boxing association has seen higher levels of engagement from the youth and the community than previously experienced.

Mareeba Boxing and Judo Hall – Trainer Patty McLean says: I am overwhelmed with the hard work and infrastructure that the combined efforts of RISE and the Mareeba Shire Council have produced. The place is now functional, clean, and tidy. We have more job seekers than ever, and parents are now attending with their children, which did not happen prior to the upgrade of the premises. We have started a new class due to the increasing interest with local youth. We are very grateful with the overall upgrades and cannot forget to thank the WfD participants who made this happen.

The ongoing support from the Mareeba Shire Council has been invaluable to the project and RISE throughout the region. The Mareeba Shire Council has assisted with the supply of raw materials and pavers to beautify the project and allow the upskilling of the local job seekers.

RISE Ventures, Chairman Nyunggai Warren Mundine AO, said, “We are very proud of this result and the positive impact this will have on the community. It would not have happened without the support of Department, Prime Minister and Cabinet and Minister Scullion. Our job seekers thrive on seeing the results of a completed project and this is one we are exceptionally proud to see come to fruition”.

The project is due to be completed within the next 3 weeks and upon the completion of the Mareeba Boxing Hall, Nyunggai Warren Mundine AO and the Mayor of the Mareeba Shire Council will officially reopen the renovated premises. Mareeba Shire Council now rates this property as an asset to their community and values the outcome of this project due to the continual youth engagement and community benefit that will be seen for many years to come.
