To assist with increasing activity attendance we consulted with the ladies of Kowanyama over what they’d like as a reward for attending. The ladies suggested a cultural activity involving an on country trip to South Mitchell for fishing, cooking their catch over coals and the gathering of traditional items to use in their creative activities.
Some of the older ladies in the community attended so that they could share culture with the younger jobseekers in the activity.
Below is a shark bone necklace made by a jobseeker
We took 2 troopies of participants who caught barramundi and crabs. The hardest part of the day was convincing the ladies it was time to head home.
This cultural activity has led to a higher level of engagement in activity and the ladies are already planning their September adventure.
