In February, we shared this story of three young men who had started learning carpentry with our Supervisors in Pormpuraaw.
Since then, our youth engagement has taken off! We’ve welcomed 12 disengaged young people in the past 6-weeks.
Seeing what their mates had been doing with the RISE Ventures team prompted more young men to sign-up to construct their own building projects and contribute to their community.
Macwadie, Jaydan and Mclean were keen to learn carpentry skills and under the expert guidance of our Supervisors, constructed two tables from repurposed materials.
They even got creative with their painting and stenciling!
Mclean and Jayden also decided to join the Land & Sea Project team and started by mowing lawns around the community and helping to maintain the cemetery.
While being mentored by Elder Employees and Supervisors, they are both learning new skills and becoming job ready for emerging vacancies in Pormpuraaw.
But it’s not just the guys who are getting involved!
We also welcomed Edwina and Jaydeen, two young women who signed-up to help with our fortnightly Op-Shop.
They did a brilliant job supporting team member Dalessa to sort the donations, run the shop and make sales.
We’re pleased to see the positive snowball effect of our focus on youth engagement and look forward to supporting more young locals to lead their own projects that they’re personally invested in.
