In September, we proudly opened our Indigenous Youth Oasis in Gimuy (Cairns).
It was a wonderful event, opened beautifully with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony by Uncle Henry.
We were honoured to have local Councillor Trevor Tim attend, speak and show his support.
This was followed by speeches from Paul Synnott – CEO Indigenous Partnerships, Teena Akiba – Program Coordinator, and Karen and Jaime – NIAA.
The Indigenous Youth Coaches team – Leath, Gina, Cam, Carly and Hadassah – introduced themselves and their roles.
A huge congratulations to the team who have been working hard to transform an old café into a vibrant, welcoming and relaxed space for local youth.
Thank you to all the local partners and stakeholders who attended.
The Indigenous Youth Coaches program has been designed exclusively for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people aged between 15-24 years old, living in Far North Queensland.
Our primary focus is youth who are not currently supported by local services.
However, we are here for all young people who need someone in their corner.
Our guiding principle is:
“No young person is left behind”
The Indigenous Youth Coaches program is funded by the National Indigenous Australians Agency’s Indigenous Skills and Employment Program.
