Pormpuraaw is known for its art and culture centre that the local community is very proud of. It is also a great spot for fishing and watching sunsets over the Gulf.
In 1986, the Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Community Council gained title to the area and has governed for their people ever since.
RISE Ventures works closely with the Pormpuraaw Aboriginal Shire Council on community projects and job opportunities for our clients.
Kowanyama
Kowanyama, with a population of almost 1200, is a laid-back Cape York community situated between Chillagoe to the east, Normanton to the West and Pormpuraaw to the north.
Kowanyama means “place of many waters” in the Yir Yoront language.
The community includes the Kokoberra, Yir Yoront [or Kokomenjen] and Kunjen clans, who each have language and other cultural differences.
