Driver licenses for Kowanyama residents leads to independence and better job prospects.

December 13, 2016

Recently Rise in conjunction with the Indigenous Driving License Unit (IDLU), conducted training which assisted 33 participants from Kowanyama with their Learners & Provisional Driver licenses.

As part of its Community Development Projects (CDP) in remote areas RISE runs regular training courses in this very important skill to increase the number of people with driver’s licences in remote areas of Australia.

RISE CDP Training Manager Claudia Di Biagio said: “not only are licenses important for a person’s independence and social interaction, it also provides people with confidence and increases their self-esteem.”

“It is also very important for employment outcomes as not holding a driver’s licence can be a real impediment for people trying to get a job or even being able to attend training that can lead to sustainable employment.”

Facilitator Rebecca McManus said: “The IDLU were an awesome team to work with. The participants were engaged and proactive from start to finish. This was not only about gaining their Learner’s licence, it was about how this would be the start of their new future. I was in awe to see their confidence increase day by day.”

Rebecca added: “the participants were absolutely delighted to have a license and are very keen to enjoy the freedom that being able to drive a motor vehicle provides for them especially in remote areas of Australia where public transport is virtually non-existent.”
